Young People gathered at Nairobi Youth Climate Hub

On October 21, 2024, the Nairobi Youth Climate Hub was launched, gathering over 100 young climate leaders and key stakeholders to collaborate on climate solutions for Nairobi and beyond. Spearheaded by the Youth Climate Collaborative (YCC) and supported by the Environmental Defense Fund, this new initiative provides an inclusive, accessible platform where young people can work together, share resources, and drive impactful climate action.

Hosted by Pooja Tilvawala of Youth Climate Collaborative, the event marked a powerful point for the ongoing youth-driven climate efforts. The Nairobi Youth Climate Hub will connect young leaders and partners from different sectors to create a cohesive and effective approach to local climate challenges through regular monthly meetings. Members will also use YCC’s Jaali tool to learn and map existing initiatives, coordinate efforts and identify opportunities for collaborative action.

Building a Climate Movement for Nairobi’s Future

The Nairobi Youth Climate Hub’s mission is clear: to create lasting, locally-led climate solutions by empowering Nairobi’s youth. This platform prioritizes actions that drive sustainable change, support environmental justice, and foster community resilience. Monthly meetings will allow members to:

  1. Share knowledge and insights on pressing climate issues, offering fresh ideas and a space to exchange valuable information on emerging local challenges and solutions.
  2. Map and strengthen climate initiatives: By documenting local projects through Jaali, the hub aims to avoid duplicated efforts and identify areas for collective impact.
  3. Enhance collaboration and coordination: With a strong network of young leaders and key partners, the hub will maximize the reach and effectiveness of climate initiatives across Nairobi.
  4. Build lasting partnerships that ensure continuity and a legacy of sustained climate action, involving youth and experienced stakeholders alike.

Why Nairobi Youth Climate Hub?

Youth participation is essential in addressing Nairobi’s climate challenges, and the Nairobi Youth Climate Hub aims to harness the unique strengths of young people—creativity, resilience, and innovative thinking. The United Nations recognizes the critical role youth play as agents of change, highlighting their potential to transform the world for the better. As part of a global youth movement, this hub prioritizes climate action that aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 13 on Climate Action, ensuring youth voices drive sustainable change.

Through this collaborative platform, young climate leaders can focus on practical solutions and develop a comprehensive climate movement that is both inclusive and inter-generational. Each meeting will not only discuss climate issues but also create pathways for action, positioning the Nairobi Youth Climate Hub as a model for community-driven climate initiatives.

Moving Forward Together

The Nairobi Youth Climate Hub has set the stage for a powerful, youth-led climate movement in the region. With the continued support of the Youth Climate Collaborative and the Environmental Defense Fund, the hub’s monthly convenings will help establish a strong network, share resources, and amplify the impact of local climate efforts.

The future of Nairobi’s climate resilience depends on inclusive, collaborative action. As members continue to connect, share, and coordinate, the Nairobi Youth Climate Hub will become a beacon for youth-driven change, helping to build a sustainable future for all. Through this initiative, young leaders will have the resources and support to transform Nairobi into a city where environmental sustainability and community resilience go hand in hand.
